OMX30 technical analysis: reading signals on a weekly basis
OMX30 is the heart of the Stockholm exchange. Learn how to run a structured weekly technical analysis of the index — and which indicators actually work on the Nordic market.
OMX30 (formally OMXS30) is the 30 most traded stocks on the Stockholm exchange and acts as a thermometer for the entire Nordic market. Understanding where OMX30 is headed matters for basically every investor — even if you only trade single stocks.
This guide gives you a concrete weekly workflow to read technical signals in OMX30 without getting stuck in analysis paralysis.
Why weekly analysis, not daily
Daily analysis of OMX30 is noise. The index moves 0.3–1% per day on pure news flow — that tells you nothing about the underlying direction. The weekly perspective filters out the noise and shows the actual trend.
Recommendation: run the analysis Sunday or Monday morning, before the market opens.
Step 1: Trend context (5 minutes)
Open a weekly chart on OMX30 (each candle = 1 week). Look at:
- SMA20 (weeks) ≈ roughly a 5-month moving average
- SMA50 (weeks) ≈ roughly a 1-year moving average
Three possible regimes:
| State | SMA20 vs SMA50 | Price vs SMA20 | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strong uptrend | SMA20 > SMA50, both sloping up | Price > SMA20 | Buy on pullbacks |
| Consolidation | SMA20 ≈ SMA50, flat | Price oscillates around SMA20 | Wait, look for breakout |
| Downtrend | SMA20 < SMA50, both sloping down | Price < SMA20 | Defensive, avoid new buys |
Step 2: Momentum with RSI and MACD (5 minutes)
On the same weekly chart:
- RSI (14): Are we above 70 (correction warning) or below 30 (potential buy)? See our RSI guide for the right interpretation.
- MACD: Is the histogram above zero and rising (positive momentum) or below zero (negative)?
An extra useful signal: MACD cross over the zero line. When MACD crosses above zero on the weekly chart, it's often an early read on a longer up-move.
Step 3: Volume (3 minutes)
Weekly volume tells you whether the move is "convicted". High up days with rising volume = institutional buying. High up days with falling volume = weak hands.
Specifically on OMX30: compare weekly volume to the 13-week average. Above 1.3× the average on a breakout = credible.
Step 4: Sector breakdown (5 minutes)
OMX30 is not homogeneous. Industrials (Volvo, Atlas Copco, Sandvik), banks (SEB, SHB, Swedbank) and heavy commodities (Boliden, SSAB) weigh differently at different times.
Quick check: which 3 sectors drove the move last week? Defensive sectors (telecom, pharma) leading = market is cautious. Cyclicals (industrials, banks) leading = market believes in growth.
Step 5: Support and resistance (5 minutes)
Identify 3 levels:
- Nearest support (where price historically reversed up)
- Nearest resistance (where price historically reversed down)
- 52-week high/low (psychological barrier)
This is where stop-loss and price targets belong. A good setup = price near support in an uptrend, with RSI rising from the 40 level.
Common mistakes in OMX30 analysis
- Watching the US instead. OMX30 has its own rhythm. S&P 500 is a factor, not a rule.
- Forgetting FX. OMX30 is SEK-denominated. When SEK weakens, exporters (Volvo, Ericsson) automatically earn more — it shows up as "technical" rallies that are really FX-driven.
- Buying OMX30 at high RSI just because the trend is up. Wait for the pullback to SMA20.
- Counting dividends wrong. OMX30 is a price index, not total return. For total return, look at OMXSGI.
Summary — weekly workflow
- Trend (SMA20/50) — 5 min
- Momentum (RSI, MACD) — 5 min
- Volume — 3 min
- Sector drivers — 5 min
- Support/resistance — 5 min
Total time: ~25 minutes per week for a complete OMX30 picture.
